REFEREE COURSES

Interested in becoming a basketball referee? Surfcoast Basketball Association (SBA) runs Green Shirt Referee Courses throughout the year for anyone looking to begin their officiating journey. The Green Shirt Program provides the training and support needed to develop the knowledge, confidence and practical skills required to referee junior basketball.

How to Apply

Applications for Green Shirt courses open at designated times throughout the year and will be promoted through SBA’s usual communication channels, including our website, social media and newsletters.

Please note that applications are only accepted during these advertised periods. Outside of these application windows, SBA does not maintain a waiting list.
As places are limited, successful applicants will be selected based on:

• Program capacity
• Availability for competition days and venues
• Suitability for the role

Eligibility

To apply, applicants must:

• Be at least 14 years of age
• Have a positive attitude and willingness to learn
• Be available to attend the required training and practical sessions

Course Fees

A course fee applies to cover the cost of your Green Shirt referee uniform and whistle.

Further Development

At Surfcoast Basketball Association, referee development doesn’t stop after you earn your stripes. We employ dedicated Referee Supervisors and Coaches who provide ongoing mentoring, coaching and feedback to help referees build their confidence, develop their skills and progress through the officiating pathway.

Surfcoast Basketball Association is always seeking experienced referees to join our officiating team across our domestic competitions and representative programs. Whether you’re relocating to the area, looking for additional games, or wanting to become part of a supportive and growing referee community, we welcome referees of all experience levels.

Referee Pathways

Refereeing can take you further than you ever imagined. Starting with local domestic basketball at SBA, referees can progress through association, state and national accreditation pathways, officiating representative basketball, tournaments, championships, Big V, NBL1, the WNBL and NBL, with the opportunity for some to be selected for international competitions including FIBA events, World Championships and even the Olympic Games.

Whether your goal is to earn some extra income, stay involved in the game, or officiate on the biggest stage in world basketball, every journey starts with a whistle and your first game at Surfcoast Basketball Association.
