    BECOMING A REFEREE COACH

    Being involved in Referee Education provides you with the opportunity to view the game from a different perspective.

    You are provided the opportunity to support officials with their development, be a leader within your local association, and pass on your knowledge and experience to other officials. As you can see below, referee coaching is a journey that can take you to the WNBL, NBL and Olympics!

    REFEREE COACH LEVELS EXPLAINED

    MENTOR

    Minimum ‘B’ Grade. Keen to support a new referee and share your knowledge and experience? Work closely with a new referee in their first 3 months out on the court as a mentor.

    Minimum ‘A’ Grade, and at least 18 years of age. Someone who is keen to take on a leadership opportunity at the local association, help protect the referees, and support the competition.

    To be a Grade 1 Referee Coach you must be a minimum of 18 years of age, and hold an ‘A Grade’ referee qualification.  This course will give you the ability to coach, assess and grade referees up to ‘B’ Grade.  To gain this qualification you must complete the relevant course and be assessed by a Basketball Victoria approved Educator.

    Transition from Local Association to State/National Body

    After obtaining their Grade 1 Qualification, a referee coach can determine if they would like to continue their journey to the State Leagues. This is a significant commitment and is based on the ability of the referee coach and their professionalism. The Elite Leagues participate on a Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday, and are required to travel across the State.

    GRADE 2

    To be a Grade 2 Referee Coach you must have held your Grade 1 qualification for at least 12 months and be nominated to Basketball Victoria.  This qualification gives you the ability to coach up to Level 1, Assess up to  ‘A’ Grade, and Present Beginner Schools. To gain this qualification you must complete the relevant course and be assessed by a Basketball Victoria approved Educator.

    The primary focus of a Grade 3 Referee Coach is to coach and assess our Elite Referees and Referee Coaches (coach up to Level 3 and Grade 2, assess up to Level 2).  There is a significant focus on technical knowledge and the use of technology.  To gain this qualification you must be assessed by the Elite Development Officer.

    Referee Coaches have the opportunity to educate referees in the National Competitions (NBL & WNBL).  These roles are broken into coaches who assess the referees vs coaches who develop the referees.  To reach this level you will be identified by Basketball Australia and/or the National Basketball League.

    Referee Coaches can participate in an instructors course if selected by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).  This provides them the qualification to referee coach internationally in competitions such as the Olympics and World Championships.  These referee coaches are referred to as FiBA Instructors.
