BRIEF HISTORY
The Surfcoast Basketball Association (SBA) is the governing body for basketball across the Surf Coast region and has proudly served our community since becoming an incorporated association in 2017. Today, SBA is one of Victoria’s fastest-growing basketball associations, providing opportunities for players of all ages and abilities to participate, develop and enjoy the game.
From a child’s very first basketball experience through to senior representative competition, our vision is to create lifelong opportunities in basketball while fostering a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone.
Where We Started
Basketball in the Surf Coast region was originally facilitated by the Surf Coast Shire. As the region experienced significant population growth and participation in basketball continued to increase, the local basketball community recognised the need for a dedicated sporting association to lead the game’s future.
With the support of the Surf Coast Shire and Basketball Victoria, the Surfcoast Basketball Association was established to manage and grow basketball across the region, creating stronger pathways for players, coaches, referees and volunteers.
Basketball on the Surf Coast Today
What began as a local domestic competition has grown into a thriving basketball community.
Today, Surfcoast Basketball Association proudly delivers:
- Domestic competitions involving more than 200 teams each season.
- 20+ Junior Surfcoast Chargers representative teams competing in the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL).
- Four Senior Surfcoast Chargers Big V teams competing in Basketball Victoria’s premier senior representative competition:
- Youth League Women
- Youth League Men
- Senior Women
- Senior Men
Our competitions and programs are delivered across eight stadiums throughout the Surf Coast region, allowing more local families than ever to participate in basketball close to home.
A Growing Basketball Community
Basketball on the Surf Coast continues to grow each year, with opportunities available for participants of every age and stage.
Our programs include:
- Aussie Hoops – introductory basketball for young beginners.
- Rookie Hoops – modified domestic competition for Under 9 players.
- Walking Basketball – a fun, low-impact program for older adults and those returning to sport.
- Grom Squad – representative development program for aspiring Chargers.
- Brekky Buckets – before-school basketball sessions.
- Ability Hoops – an inclusive basketball program designed to support participants of all abilities.
Together, these programs create clear pathways for players to begin, develop and continue their basketball journey within the Surfcoast Basketball Association.
Representative Success
Our Surfcoast Chargers representative program has quickly established itself as one of Victoria’s emerging basketball programs. Our junior representative teams have enjoyed outstanding success at Junior Country Championships, consistently demonstrating the strength of player development across the association.
In 2025, the Surfcoast Chargers celebrated a significant milestone when our Senior Men’s Big V team claimed the Association’s first Big V Championship, creating a proud moment in the history of Surfcoast Basketball and inspiring the next generation of Chargers. These achievements reflect the dedication of our players, coaches, officials, volunteers and families who continue to build a strong and respected basketball culture.
Looking Ahead
Surfcoast Basketball Association continues to grow alongside our community. As participation increases, we remain committed to expanding opportunities for players, coaches, referees and volunteers while delivering safe, inclusive and high-quality basketball experiences.
Whether you’re picking up a basketball for the very first time, coaching a local team, officiating a game, or representing the Surfcoast Chargers on the court, you’re an important part of our story. We look forward to continuing to grow the game of basketball across the Surf Coast for many years to come.
