    What is Surfcoast Chargers?

    The Surfcoast Chargers are the representative basketball program of Surfcoast Basketball Association. Our junior teams compete in the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) and represent Surfcoast Basketball Association at tournaments throughout Victoria.

    The program provides players with the opportunity to further develop their basketball skills in a challenging and supportive team environment while competing against associations from across the state.

    How do I become a Charger?

    Each year, Representative Team Tryouts are held in early October for the following VJBL season.
    Players who are successful at tryouts are selected into Surfcoast Chargers teams, which remain together from October through to September the following year.

    Most selected teams compete in the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL). Where player numbers and the standard of applicants permit, additional tournament-only teams may also be formed in some age groups.

    Can anyone try out?

    If you are a registered participant in the Surfcoast Basketball Association domestic competition, you are eligible to register for Surfcoast Chargers tryouts. Players currently registered with another basketball association are also welcome to trial, provided they:

    • Obtain a Permission to Train from their current representative association before attending tryouts.
    • Commit to joining the SBA domestic competition for both the Summer and Winter domestic seasons during their representative year if selected.

    Please note that meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee selection. Surfcoast Chargers is a representative basketball program, and teams are selected through a competitive tryout process. Coaches assess players across a range of areas, including basketball skills, decision making, athletic ability, coachability, attitude, teamwork and potential, to select teams that will compete at the highest level possible.

    What is the commitment?

    Being a Surfcoast Charger is a significant commitment that requires dedication throughout the representative season.

    Players are expected to commit to:

    • Weekly team training sessions (generally held on Sundays at SBA venues).
    • Weekly VJBL games from October through to September.
    • Travel to venues throughout metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.
    • Approximately half of VJBL games being played at home and half away.
    • Participation in three to four tournaments throughout the year, depending on the team’s schedule.

    Representative basketball provides an excellent opportunity for players to develop their skills, build lifelong friendships and compete against some of Victoria’s best junior basketballers. Commitment to training, games and team activities is an important part of being a Surfcoast Charger.

    Tryout Expressions of Interest

    Expressions of Interest for Surfcoast Chargers tryouts generally open in August each year. Registration details, important dates and tryout information are published via Surfcoast Basketball Association’s website and social media channels. We encourage all eligible players who are passionate about developing their basketball and are ready to embrace the commitment of representative sport to register for tryouts.
