    Being a Scoretable Official is a fantastic way to be involved in basketball beyond playing, coaching or refereeing while developing a greater understanding and appreciation of the game.

    Surfcoast Basketball Association is always looking for enthusiastic and reliable Scoretable Officials to assist with our Big V senior home games. Scoretable officials play an essential role in ensuring games run smoothly and professionally.
    There are a variety of roles available, including:

    • Scorer
    • Timer
    • Shot Clock Operator
    • Statistician

    Whether you’re a parent, former player, current player or basketball enthusiast, becoming a Scoretable Official is a great way to contribute to the game and experience the excitement of Big V basketball from the best seat in the house.

    How to get started as a Scoretable Official

    To become a Scoretable Official, you’ll first need to complete the Basketball Australia Level 1 Scoretable Course through the Basketball Australia eTrainU platform.
    The online course:

    • Costs $10
    • Can be completed at your own pace
    • Provides a Certificate of Completion upon successful completion

    Once you’ve completed the course, contact Surfcoast Basketball Association to register your interest in joining our team of Scoretable Officials. Training and mentoring will be provided to help you gain confidence in each role.

    SCORETABLE OFFICIAL LEVELS EXPLAINED

    To receive your Level 1 qualification, you must successfully an online training course and exam. Officials are then directed to their home association where senior scoretable officials will assist them with on game training to build their practical scoring skills. Officials are also evaluated in each of the scoretable roles during a game across the season. Level 1 officials have the foundation skills and knowledge to work at Big V and NBL1

    A Level 2 Official has built upon their knowledge and experience and is qualified to work in all positions for all Big V, NBL1 and tournament games. To obtain a Level 2 qualification, you must successfully attend a one-day course, successfully complete an exam and pass an on-game assessment in each of the four positions.  

    A Level 3 official is expected to have demonstrated a thorough understanding of all the rules, interpretations and ancillary guidelines that dictate how the game is administered.  A Level 3 scorer must be able to quickly identify which Article of the FIBA Rules of Basketball is relevant and which interpretation has been applied. They need to ensure there is a consistent application of the rule.  Qualification at this level involves a full-day course, successful completion of a rules exam and an assessment in all positions on the scoretable. 

    Level 4 officials are accredited by Basketball Victoria after successfully meeting the following criteria:

    • Hold the Victorian Level 3 accreditation
    • Be selected onto the National Panels by NBL/BA; and
    • Have officiated a minimum of 15 games on the National leagues.

    At this level, a scoretable official is taking on serious responsibilities: Big V & NBL1 finals, NBL & WNBL Competitions and National Championships.

    Level 5 officials are accredited by Basketball Victoria in conjunction with Basketball Australia’s National Technical Officials Commission. This accreditation is awarded once the official meets the following criteria:

    • Holds the Victorian Level 3 accreditatio
    • Holds the FIBA International Scoretable License
    • Successfully completes an International tournament and is ratified as a ‘National Level 4 Table Official’; or
    • Officiates a minimum of 8 FIBA sanctioned international games
